LETTERS, Page 5Oil Spill in . . . Sandwich Sound
The Alaskan oil spill prompted some readers to ask about the
name of Prince William Sound. The story goes like this: Captain
James Cook, the English navigator who first charted the area in
1778, named it Sandwich Sound after the fourth Earl of Sandwich,
an English politician and then Lord of the Admiralty. But Sandwich
fell out of political favor, and the name was changed to Prince
William Sound, after William, Duke of Clarence, third son of
Britain's George III. In 1830 the prince became King William IV.
